“Life is Good”

David Allred Coons, age 74, passed away peacefully in his home on January 23, 2023, after a long battle with multiple myeloma.

Dave was born on 23 July 1948 in Salt Lake City, to Anne and Bernell Coons. At the age of 10, he moved to Bountiful, where he has resided ever since.

He graduated from Bountiful High School in 1966. He attended Southern Utah University for a short time until he was drafted for military service with the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After basic training, he was sent to Virginia for training in helicopter maintenance. This training prepared him for his tour of duty in Vietnam, which led to his lifelong career in the Army and Army Reserves.

In 1972 he married the love of his life Bonnie Jean Johnson and they were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. In that same year, he started his own business as a brick mason. His meticulous and beautiful brick work can be seen throughout the entire state.

In 1990 he was deployed with the 321st Medical Detachment to Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Following this service, he began his civil career working for the United States Government as a mechanic. His MOS changed from aviation to medical, which led to over 10 years of developing and instructing combat lifesaving courses for many soldiers. He retired in 2008 from the military with the rank of Master Sergeant, but his love of working with his hands and helping others continued in laying brick until he was no longer physically able to do so.

Dave's passion was his family, most importantly Bonnie. He adored her. His life's work revolved around her, their children, and their grandchildren. He was an avid outdoorsman. The Uinta Mountains were his second home where he enjoyed every minute he could, fishing and hunting with his family. Dave loved to garden. Every year he grew a beautiful garden which he loved to share with anyone. Nobody cheered louder for BYU than he did. He was true blue all the way.

Dave spent his entire life in service to those around him. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he held multiple callings in Elders Quorum, Primary, Sunday School and his favorite calling of all, Scout Master. Not a day went by that he didn't utter the phrase "life is good". No matter the trials he faced, his positive attitude shined through. He was an example to all who knew him.

Dave is survived by his loving wife Bonnie, their children, Michael (Staci), Ryan (Merilee), Camille (Gary), 14 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 2 brothers and 2 sisters and their spouses, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son Corey, parents, Anne and Bernell, in-laws Albert and Louise Johnson, and grandson Kelly.

We would like to thank the amazing staff at Huntsman Cancer Institute for the loving care they offered to him over the last 9 years. We are so grateful for their dedication and friendship.
