Darlene Cheney Cook, age 97, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2025, at Creekside Assisted Living in Bountiful, Utah. She was born on January 5, 1928, to Gladys and Addison B. Cheney, and spent nearly her entire life in the Salt Lake Valley. She moved to Bountiful six years ago to be closer to family.
Darlene was married to James Otis Morton and later to Joseph Benjamin Cook, who preceded her in death ten years ago at the age of 97. She was a devoted mother to her three children: James A Morton (Tami), Vicki M Berthold (Jeff), and John M Morton (Lynne)—all of whom survive her. She is also survived by her brother Robert H. Cheney (Sue), and was preceded in death by her brother Richard A Cheney.
Darlene’s greatest joy came from her family. She leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, all of whom were blessed by her love, optimism, and genuine enthusiasm for life.
Darlene had a vibrant spirit and embraced life’s simple joys. She loved to bowl and was an active member of a bowling league for many years. Known for her playful sense of fun, she delighted in dressing up for Halloween and even won several office costume contests. Holidays, especially Christmas, were magical with Darlene—she remembered every birthday, celebrated every season, and created traditions, such as sleep-overs with her grandchildren, that will always be cherished. She enjoyed eating at the Olive Garden, going to the movies, and spending time with friends and loved ones.
A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Darlene served faithfully in many capacities. She volunteered with various charities throughout her life and proudly served as PTA President for her children’s school. Her kindness, optimism, and deep love for her family and community defined her life.
Darlene will be remembered for her warmth, her humor, her generosity, and her unwavering optimism. Her legacy lives on in her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and in all who were blessed to know her.
