Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother, Daniel Walter Chilcott, passed from this plane of existence peacefully on April 17, 2023. He was surrounded by his family and is suffering no more pain.
Daniel was born on September 20, 1957 in West Lafayette, Indiana to Josephine and Roger William Chilcott. He was the fourth of six children. Growing up in an Air Force family, Dan had the opportunity to travel the world at a young age, and he spoke often of the times that he lived in Germany, Washington, and Florida, as well as many other places.
He graduated from Rutherford High School, in Panama City, FL, and because he was a lifelong patriot, he joined the Air Force, where he spent 4 years as an ICBM Bomb Technician. When he left the Air Force, he returned home to Florida and worked at the Piggly Wiggly and the Bait Shop for a while, flirting with all the ladies and enjoying the beach life. Dan was a wanderer at heart and he loved to take trips to explore, either on a motorcycle trip, or camping with friends and family. He worked in the oil fields for Haliburton in Wyoming and he was even a used-car salesman at one time. His charm and good humor made him a natural.
He settled down in Layton, Utah when he went to work at Hill Air Force Base, and he was happily living the bachelor life with his dog Max when he met the love of his life, Phyllis Carter. They were married in October of 1995 and Dan became a husband, father, and grandfather, all within the space of one month. Dan was a wonderful father and an even better Grandpa. He loved his family with his whole heart and spent so much time teaching his kids how to fish, and build, the value of hard work, and how to get a great deal, and he shared his knowledge freely. If there was something you needed to know, he was “here to tell ya.”
He was known for his humor and his quick wit and his sparkling blue eyes. He could make you laugh with his jokes and he loved to tease and make the ladies blush. He loved the great outdoors and was an avid fisherman and he loved to spend time with friends out on the water in his boat. In his retirement he loved to keep busy and was always completing some type of home improvement project or other, and building beautiful furniture and woodworking projects in his shop. There wasn’t a person that met Dan that didn’t become his friend and he had so much love to share with this world.
Dan was preceded in death by his father Roger and his dog Max. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Phyllis, his daughter Amy and son-in-love David, his grandchildren Tessa, Andrew (Haylie), Aidan, and Charlie Starks, his mother Josephine, siblings Kathy (Bill) Collins of WY, Pat (Scott) Brown of AZ, Roger (Marie) Chilcott of FL, Tim (Zen) Chilcott of ME, and Tammy Vaught of WY, as well as his “Brother from another mother” Lee (Donna) Kranendonk and several nieces and nephews and lifelong friends. The family would also like to thank the staff at Huntsman Farmington Infusion Center for the wonderful care they provided to Dan during his illness. They would also like to thank the staff of Applegate Homecare & Hospice for their kindness and making his transition comfortable. In lieu of a funeral service, Dan has chosen to have his ashes scattered in the places that he loved most: Utah, Wyoming, Florida, and Maine. Until we see him again, don’t be sad that he’s gone, be grateful that we got to love him while he was here.
