Dale G. Callan passed away peacefully on Monday, September 8, 2025 in Farmington, Utah, having reached his 101st birthday on that very same day. He was born on September 8, 1924 (which was also a Monday) in Weston, Idaho. His parents were Golden Callan and Golda Olsen Callan. Sadly, his father, Golden, died of acute appendicitis at the age of 20 when Dale was only three years old. As time went by, Dale ended up spending much of his childhood with his grandmother, Emma Callan, in Dayton, Idaho, growing up with his aunts Norma, Venita, O’Enone, Mary, and Virginia who were more like sisters to him. Dale’s mother soon married Rulon Mitchell and they had three children whose names were Marilyn, Nyles, and Clain.
Dale graduated from Preston High School (Idaho) where he was active in sports and was elected Senior Class President. As a lineman on the football team, he topped out at 135 pounds. He joined the Marine Corp, serving for four years between WWII and the Korean War. He was proud to say he attended school at all three Arizona colleges: Arizona, Arizona State, and Northern Arizona, as well as a year at Louisiana Tech. He worked for Skaggs Drug Centers and affiliates for 40 years, as a store manager in Arizona and Nevada and as a vice president in both Kansas and Utah.
While in Arizona Dale married Josephine Coulson (later divorced). Children from that marriage were Carol, Michael, Jimmy, Claudia and Rhonda. In 1964, while single and working in Las Vegas, Dale met Grace, who had also gone through a divorce and had two boys, Paul and Mark. They got married on January 25, 1965. Grace and Dale and the boys became active in the Las Vegas Sixth Ward and formed many close friendships which have lasted a lifetime. Two years later, in 1967, they solemnized their marriage in the St. George Temple.
In 1971, Grace and Dale moved to Overland Park, Kansas where they would spend the next nine years of their lives. While in the Kansas City area, church activity occupied much of their time, as Grace served as Stake Relief Society President and Dale as a member of the Stake High Council. Upon transferring to Utah, they purchased a condo in Bountiful, Utah and became members of the wonderful Mueller Park Fifth Ward. After retirement, Grace and Dale served missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Melbourne, Australia and Jacksonville, Florida. They also served for four years as Ordinance Workers in the Bountiful Utah Temple. In 2015, they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
Dale is survived by sons Paul (Kristie) and Mark (Sandy), and daughters Carol (Larry), Claudia, and Rhonda along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren, one of which was given the name Golden Callan. Many of his grandchildren are serving missions throughout the world. He was preceded in death by his dear wife Grace (in 2023) as well as his parents, siblings, aunts and uncles. He was also preceded in death by his great-granddaughter Summer Anna Callan.
