On Thursday October 23, 2025, heaven received our sweet mother Caroldyn Smoot Francis, beautiful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She passed away into the loving arms of her husband Richard at the age of 90.
Caroldyn was born on April 16, 1935 to Edgar Stubbs and Dora Millard Smoot of Centerville, Utah. Caroldyn married Richard Dee Francis on August 12, 1953 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and were married 72 years. They have six children.
Caroldyn spent her early years happy, working and playing on the Smoot dairy farm with her brothers and sister. She developed a lifelong love of rich cream and butter. While attending Davis High School and on a swimming trip, she fell for a handsome lifeguard from Morgan, Richard Francis. They were married. Richard began working with the Davis School District while Caroldyn was being a mother and homemaker. As the children grew older Caroldyn joined Richard at Clearfield High School. Caroldyn devoted decades in the front office where she made many friends and touched so many lives.
Cherry Lane in Fruit Heights was their home. Caroldyn was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She generously served and ministered to ward members and neighbors. Mom and Dad served nine years as LDS church service missionaries at Temple Square in Salt Lake City. Mom was a great cook, she especially loved preparing big meals for the family. Mom was a friend to everyone and made friends easily. Mom loved online shopping and it became one of her favorite past times. She loved visits from her family and friends, especially from her grandchildren.
Caroldyn is survived by her six children, Debbie (Tyler) Sprague, Karen (Steve) Holbrook, Janet Francis Hamblin, Janice (Kirk) Mangus, Susie (Bob) Beers, Rick (Triscia) Francis. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Dee Francis, her parents Edgar Stubbs and Dora Millard Smoot and brothers Harold Edgar Smoot, Stanley Millard Smoot, Calvin E. Smoot, one sister Doriene Knight, sister-in-law Mary Ellen Smoot.
A very special thanks to all the staff at Apple Village and especially to CNS Hospice nurses Danita, Deana, Laura, Melina and Leah for their care, love and support at the end of her journey.
