Carol was born December 4, 1934, to Harold Silven Hutchings and Ruth Ehlers Hutchings. She was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was the oldest of 7 children – 6 girls and 1 boy.
She graduated from South High School in 1953 and the University of Utah in 1957. She later served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Swedish Mission. She served 3 months in Sweden and then was called to Frankfurt, Germany, at the European Mission headquarters, where she served as President Alvin R. Dyer’s secretary for 20 months. She returned to Sweden for the last month of her mission. Later, upon returning home, she typed four of Elder Dyer’s books to be published. She also worked as a secretary in the office of the Secretary of State at the Utah State Capitol.
In 1963, she married her sweetheart, Willard Royal Malmstrom, in the Salt Lake City Temple. Seven children joined their family. Carol was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed singing in the Salt Lake Symphonic Choir, sewing, quilting, creative baking, crocheting, knitting and cross-stitching beautiful things for her family and friends.
She oversaw the children’s newspaper route for 23 years and was an excellent seamstress. She was always busy with multiple projects. She enjoyed music, gardening and reading. She ensured that all her children were given the opportunity to learn to play the piano and taught herself to play. She was passionate about helping her grandchildren learn to read. She loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and instilled His teachings in her children by her example. She served another full-time mission with Willard in 2006-2007 for 20 months at the Church Missionary Department in Salt Lake City. They later served in the Stockholm Sweden Temple for 10 months, which brought them both great joy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister JoAnn Knight, brother Mark Hutchings and son-in-law Howard Wright.
Carol is survived by her children: David (Patricia) Malmstrom, Lisa (Robert) Lisota, Mark (Candace) Malmstrom, Kristina Wright, Richard (Alysia) Malmstrom, Aaron (Nan) Malmstrom, and Clary (Sieben) Smoot; 25 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren; and sisters Joyce Yates, Geraldeen Catmull, Bonnie Norman, and Sally Curtis.
