Byron Rolph Berven

November 17, 1930 — December 14, 2023

North Salt Lake, UT

Byron Rolph Berven passed away on December 14, 2023, at the age of 93.  He was born on November 17, 1930 in Los Angeles, California to Knute John Berven and Olga Rose Pascal Berven.  He graduated from Huntington Park High School in 1947.  After graduation, he joined the Air Force and was deployed in Japan and Korea during the Korean War.

He married Carol Jean Simpson on October 11, 1952, and they were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on June 27, 1974.  Byron graduated from the University of Utah in 1960 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.  During his engineering career he worked for North American Aviation in the Aerospace Industry on the Apollo project, Chicago Bridge & Iron, and Sperry Univac in Salt Lake City until retiring in 1993.  Byron and Carol resided in Lynwood, California until they relocated their family to North Salt Lake, Utah in 1969.

Byron was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities including Bishop of the Orchard Fifth Ward in North Salt Lake.  In 2000 he and Carol served a mission at the Family History Center in St. George, Utah.

After moving to Utah at age forty, he took up jogging.  This led to running in his first marathon at the age of fifty and competing in multiple marathons, a hobby that he continued to enjoy into his seventies.  He loved golfing, electronics and reading.  He was always inquisitive and never stopped trying to learn about many new and different subjects.

He served on the North Salt Lake Planning Commission and City Council from 1986 to 1991.

Byron was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, son and brother, whose family was his greatest joy.  He is survived by his son John Edward (Lynette) Berven and daughter Diane Burton.  He is also survived by 8 grandchildren – Jason Berven, Brittney Gatherum, Jamie Naylor, Aimee Schreiner, Jordan Berven, Lindsey Rasmusen, Emily Stapley, and Kelsey ZoBell; 18 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, parents, brothers Richard Berven, Bruce Berven, Robert Berven, and sisters Adele Costigan and June Hollister.

The family would like to express gratitude for the loving care provided to him through the staff at Creekside Assisted Living and A1 Hospice.
