Brent Lawrence Dietrich

Brent Lawrence Dietrich, age 61, passed away on July 18, 2026, after a brave battle with cancer. He was born in Salt Lake City on April 29, 1965, to his parents Frederick and Valda Dietrich, and was the youngest of five children raised in Salt Lake City.

Brent lived a life defined by devotion—to his faith, his family, his work, and the people he served. He graduated from Olympus High School, where he played soccer, and from a young age worked hard for everything he achieved. One of his proudest early accomplishments was purchasing his first car, the infamous red VW Rabbit, which he cherished.

An Eagle Scout, Brent developed a lifelong love for the outdoors. Camping became one of his favorite activities, especially when shared with his family. He delighted in organizing ATV rides, building campfires, preparing Dutch oven meals, and playing games around the campsite. Brent also found joy in working with youth through programs such as Scouting and the Special Olympics. He enjoyed movies, golfing, and bowling, but his greatest happiness came from time spent with his family.

A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Brent served a mission in Australia, often sharing stories of the adventures and cherished memories he made there.

Brent dedicated 34 years to law enforcement. He began his career as a police officer in Cache County, later served with the Salt Lake City Police Department, earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and ultimately retired in 2024 as a Captain with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, working in the jail. Throughout his career, he became a respected example to those around him, building lasting friendships and positively impacting countless lives. In addition to his law enforcement service, Brent worked for Delta Airlines for eight years, where he built many friendships and became a valued part of the Delta family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frederick Dietrich, and his sister, ValLynn Bauer.

Brent leaves behind his wife Shellie, 7 children, and 5 grandchildren. Their children: Tim (Lorraine, sons Elliott and William), Crystal (Braden, daughter Emma), Zach (Nicole, daughter Riley), Taylor (Darvie), Alisha, Shalise (Justin, daughter Jasmine), and Dallyn.

Services

A viewing will be held in his honor on Sunday, July 26, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at the LDS church located at 2024 South 1475 West, Syracuse, UT 84075. A second viewing will be held on Monday, July 27, from 9:30–10:30 a.m. at the same location, followed by funeral services from 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Interment will take place at 12:30 p.m. at Lindquist Cemetery, 1867 N. Fairfield Road, Layton, Utah.

Brent will be remembered for his kindness, his dedication, his humor, and the unwavering love he had for his family. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched.
