Audrey Jane Burgin Hazelgren

March 9, 1932 — December 8, 2025

Bountiful, UT

Audrey Jane Burgin Hazelgren, a devoted mother, dedicated educator, and woman of unwavering faith, passed away on the morning of December 8, 2025, peacefully in her home and surrounded by family. Born just after midnight on March 9, 1932, in Grace, Idaho, to Lawrence Burgin and Mildred Nellie Hansen, she was the youngest of four children and grew up during the Great Depression and World War II in the small farming community of Grace, Idaho.

She was preceded in death by her siblings LaMar Burgin, Josephine Gardner, andFlorence McCulloch, and is survived by her three children: Mark (Linda), Paul (Alison), and Karen, and seven grandchildren: Matthew, Ryan, Nicole, Gary, Amanda, Blake and Candace.

Audrey's childhood was shaped by her father's potato farm and an International Harvester dealership, and by a mother who taught her determination and the value of education. Though small in stature like her mother (standing just over 5 feet tall), Audrey possessed an outsized determination and work ethic that would define her life.

A 1950 graduate of Grace High School, Audrey excelled academically, winning sweepstakes awards for her homemaking projects and earning a scholarship to Utah State Agricultural College (now Utah State University). She was a proud member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority while attending Utah State. She graduated in 1954 with a degree in secondary education, specializing in home economics—a field where she would touch countless young lives over a distinguished 30-year teaching career. She began teaching at Murray Junior High in 1954, and later transferred to Davis County, where she taught at Bountiful Junior High and South Davis Junior High until her retirement. A beloved educator, her students remembered her dedication, creativity, and the practical life skills she imparted with patience and care.

In 1956, Audrey married Gary Hyrum Hazelgren, with whom she had three children: Mark Hyrum, Paul Burgin, and Karen. Though the marriage ended in divorce in 1972, Audrey raised her three children with grace, resilience, and the same determination her mother had modeled for her. She worked tirelessly to provide for her family, often juggling teaching, substitute work, and summer programs while maintaining an active role in their lives and church community. A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Audrey served faithfully in numerous callings, including Primary teacher, cub scout den mother, and Relief Society teacher. She served as a temple worker at the Bountiful Temple for many years and served as a missionary in the Family History Library. Her faith sustained her through life's challenges and guided her commitment to service.

Audrey cherished her friendships, maintaining close bonds with high school classmates for over 60 years, gathering for reunions filled with laughter and shared memories. She loved to read and was an original member of the Bountiful-based Femmes de Lettres Book Club for nearly 50 years. She was also active in community involvement serving as an election judge for several election cycles.

Audrey loved to travel, taking memorable trips across the United States and internationally, including Europe and Asia. She was also an avid sports fan, a trait she acquired from her father. She loved the local university sports teams, especially her beloved Utah State Aggies and of course, she supported the Utah Jazz, attending many games with her sister Florence.

Above all, Audrey was devoted to her children and grandchildren: Mark and his children Matthew and Ryan; Paul and his children Nicole and Gary; and Karen and her children Amanda, Blake, and Candace. She delighted in their achievements, supported their dreams, and created a home filled with warmth, and unconditional love. Her life was marked by quiet strength, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to education, faith, and family.

She never complained, always persevered, was very generous and forgiving and never held a grudge. She taught by example that determination and hard work could overcome any obstacle. Her legacy lives on in the students she taught, and most especially in the lives of her children and grandchildren who carry forward her values of faith, education, and service.

”She could put on a real nice meal in a short period of time... and she kept a nice clean home. She always went to church... I think she had a strong testimony." —Audrey, speaking of her mother, words that equally describe her own life.
