Alvin Walter Brey

June 5, 1930 — January 29, 2026

Bountiful, UT

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Alvin Walter Brey peacefully passed away Thursday, January 29, 2026, at the age of 95 of natural causes. He was born June 5, 1930, in Rodeo, California to Walter and Frieda Brey, the only boy of five children. He touched many lives with his humor, kindness, generosity, and faith. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Alvin grew up in Bountiful, Utah, graduated from Davis High School, and served honorably in the Army during the Korean war. He met the love of his life, Ileta Brindle, on a blind date, and their love story lasted the next 69 years starting with their marriage in the Salt Lake City Temple on February 25, 1955. They raised three children in Bountiful, Utah, where dad served in numerous church callings. He loved the gospel of Jesus Christ, had a strong testimony, and lived his life as an example to all of us.

Alvin worked for AT&T and then Mountain Bell, after the government anti-trust breakup in 1974, for 40 years. He started as a lineman, was a repairman, and concluded his career as a system engineer. Dad had hearing loss in his left ear from decades of listening to telephone tones.

Alvin was passionate about sports and the outdoors. He was an avid BYU fan, and loved fishing, hunting, softball, and waterskiing. He was a tremendous softball pitcher, putting the ideal height and spin on a ball. He was a great slalom water skier spending as much time as possible at Bear Lake and Lake Powell. He had a great playful sense of humor and loved to tease those he loved most.

While living in retirement for nearly 30 years in St. George, he served along with Ileta in the St. George Utah Temple. He and Mom fulfilled a genealogy mission in Kentucky, microfilming records of the Sons of the American Revolution, and a mission in the London England Temple where they loved serving both the living and the dead. Alvin had 13 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren.

Alvin is survived by his children Barbara Winegar (Bill) and Rick Brey (Jamie), sisters Marline Argyle, Joanne Argyle, and Carolyn Pace. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ileta Brey, his daughter, Deborah Larson, son-in-law, James Christopher Larson and sister Evelyn Petersen.
