Alan Edward Schulz

Alan Edward Schulz graduated from this life on August 8, 2021. He passed away unexpectedly in his home at the age of 78. He was born December 2, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to Melvin Edward and Mary Elizabeth (Justice) Schulz. Alan was raised in Chicago and moved to Salt Lake City in 1967 to begin his teaching career that lasted over 60 years. He taught in the Salt Lake City district 36 years, 3 times in China and continued substitute teaching following retirement.

Alan married Ruth Lorraine Murdoch in 1968 in the Idaho Falls Temple. They were married for 53 years. Their family included a daughter Rebecca Lynn, two adopted sons, Mark Alan and Matthew Choi and foster children, Elsie Begay, Nam Tran, Vinh Pham and John McDonald. They sponsored numerous Vietnamese families.

Alan and Ruth started their married life in Salt Lake City where they lived for 15 years. They moved to Centerville in 1983 and lived there until 2005. They moved back to Salt Lake City to the triplex they owned. They served a mission together in Malaysia and 6 years at the LDS Hospital. They taught together in Beijing, China for one year. In November 2018, Alan and Ruth moved to Summit Vista, a retirement community in Taylorsville, Utah.

Alan’s mission statement was, “I am an ODD person; organized, diligent and disciplined in keeping commitments, the commandments and covenants.” Alan was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 21, 2021 at the Salt Lake 17th Ward Chapel, 142 West 200 North, Salt Lake City, Utah, where a viewing will be held Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday morning 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services.
