Verda Macfarlane

d. December 28, 2007

Verda Taylor Macfarlane, age 90, died Friday, December 28, 2007. She passed away just one week after her husband of 72 years, Dean Macfarlane. Verda was born in New Harmony, Utah, on October 16, 1917, the daughter of William Penn Taylor and Lurene Pace Taylor. She grew up in New Harmony and attended Iron County schools and Ogden High School. Verda married Dean Macfarlane in Cedar City, Utah, July 22, 1935. She bore three children in Cedar City: Myrlene, Larry Dean and Michael C. Verda and Dean moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and Paso Alto, California before settling in Layton, Utah in 1941. Dean and Verda moved to Clearfield, Utah after living for several years in Layton and resided there until 1962 when they moved to Bountiful, Utah. After Dean?s retirement in 1973, Verda and Dean served two LDS missions in Palmyra, New York. Verda also served as a Salt Lake Temple worker and as Relief Society President twice: first, in the Boston, Massachusetts area – where she lived briefly while her husband, Dean, completed a special assignment for Hill Air Force Base – and, again, in Woods Cross, Utah. Verda is remembered for being meticulous in both her homemaking skills and personal grooming. She was a wonderful cook and a dedicated and loving grandmother. Largely self-educated, she was very well-read on a broad array of subjects. Verda?s children and grandchildren were the light of her life, and she was a major influence on them. Verda is survived by two sons: Larry Dean Macfarlane Nancy of Orem, Utah; and Michael C. Macfarlane Judy of Kaysville, Utah; one sister, Ila Walker of St. George, Utah; 13 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean; her only daughter, Myrlene Kimball McPherson; two sisters, Beaulah Cottam and Josephine Grant; her only brother, Claude Taylor and her parents. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 4, 2008 at 11:00 a.m., in the Woods Cross 3rd Ward Chapel, 1450 South 300 West, Bountiful. Friends and family may call Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main, and Friday morning 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment-Bountiful City Cemetery. Special thanks are extended from the family to Dr. David Cope for his tireless and compassionate service as her physician, to Legacy House of Bountiful and to Community Nursing Service Hospice.
