Thomas (Tom, Tommy) Elgin Young

January 5, 1938 — August 14, 2021

Thomas (Tom, Tommy) Elgin Young, completed his mortal journey August 14, 2021. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 83.
He is survived by his loyal, loving wife of 52 years, Amie Marie Stevenson Young, their six children: Tanya Crowder, Janella (Mike) Jones, Mark (Angela) Young, Julie (Nathan) Green, Cindy (Tracy) Williams, and Grant (Jennifer) Young along with 27 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 4 siblings: Linda Peck, John (Mary) Young, Nancy (Louis) Gillman and  Kathy (John) Bake.  Tom was born to John Royal and Doris Mae Reed Young on January 5, 1938 in Nevada City, California. He was the oldest of their five children. When he was 2, they moved to Fallon, Nevada, where he grew up and got married. Tom and Amie lived in Fallon until moving to Woods Cross, Utah, 14 years ago to live closer to their children.
Tom loved serving a 2½-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in São Paulo, Brazil. On his mission, he learned Portuguese and always enjoyed speaking it with others as often as possible. He also served in the National Guard for 8½ years. He was employed with US Postal Service for 34 years. Tom loved his job as a mail carrier especially visiting with the people on his mail routes, but didn’t necessarily care for their dogs.
When he was younger, Tom enjoyed woodworking, and driving the school bus during his Junior and Senior years of high school. He has always enjoyed good food, swimming, hearing and telling jokes and spending time with his extended family. Those who knew him would describe him as a special man, sweet and loving.
Tom battled mental health issues from his 20’s and was finally diagnosed with schizophrenia in his 30’s while his family was young. He bravely endured medications and their side effects these many years while loving and supporting his family. The apostle Paul’s testimony recorded in 2 Timothy 4:6-8 is most fitting for Tom’s mortal probation: “…the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day…”
A funeral service will be held to celebrate his life Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel, 1509 West 1500 South, Woods Cross, UT., where a viewing will be held from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow the funeral at Bountiful City Cemetery, 2224 S. 200 West, Bountiful, UT.
The service will be live streamed on the Russon Mortuary & Crematory Facebook page and also on Tom’s obituary page at www.russonmortuary.com.
