Sylvia Carol Holtman

April 28, 1943 — April 30, 2022

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, Sylvia Carol Holtman on April 30, 2022. She fought an incredibly courageous, yet very short physical battle and will be greatly missed by those who love her. We find great solace in knowing that she is now reunited with her best friend and husband, Steve, who passed on September 20th, 2021 after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Carol was born the 7th child of Carl Steven Akers and Sylvia Carol Akers on April 28, 1943, in Los Angeles, CA. She was born a twin, sharing her birthdate with her brother Roy. After being blessed with so many wonderful boys, her mother was finally blessed with a precious little girl. Carol grew up in North Hollywood, CA in a cozy (aka tiny) one-bedroom house that was adjacent to the family print shop, Akers Brothers & Sister Printing (Carol being the sister of the company name).

On March 11, 1966, Carol married Walter Almgren in the Los Angeles LDS Temple. Together they had four children, Julie, Walter, Jr., Alyssa, and Robert. They later divorced in 1974. Carol raised her four children by herself, while working full-time. She continually strived to be the best parent that she could be. She was selfless beyond measure and always ensured that her children’s needs were met before hers were met, a trait she passed along to her own children. She was able to create many good and fun memories for her children while they all laughed tirelessly, joked endlessly, and loved without bounds.

Carol met Steve in late 1974, and immediately fell madly in love with him. They dated off and on for many years until finally marrying on October 25, 1991. Prior to her marriage to Steve, Carol attended the University of Utah taking accounting classes and worked in payroll and accounting for 20 years until she was able to “retire” shortly after marrying Steve. She was then able to be a full-time wife, mother, and her greatest love, a grandmother. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with all of her 10 grandchildren. She did crafts with them, always thinking of new and fun things that would interest them. To say that she adored her grandchildren would be a vast understatement.

Her hobbies included sewing, crafts, beading, cross stitch, crochet, bird watching, flowers (especially irises), gardening, and collecting as much fabric as she could. She had the desire to do so much, but not as much time to complete all the projects that she had planned. Steve’s illness slowed down her desire and limited the time she had to do many things other than to take care of her beloved Steve and herself during such a difficult time. After she lost Steve in September 2021, she struggled a lot. She had lost her best friend and companion of 35+ years. As we grieve the loss of our mother, we appreciate and find comfort in the belief there is great happiness in the life hereafter as she is reunited with her loved ones, including Steve, her mother, her brothers Carl, Fred, and Roy, and many others who meant so much to her.

Carol is survived by her children, Julie Adade; Walter Almgren, Jr.; Alyssa Windley; Robert Almgren (Kaye); her brothers, Bob Akers (Lee); David Akers (Kay); Arnold Akers (Mari-Anne), sisters-in-law, Jan Akers and Virginia Elwood-Akers. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Alex, Luis, Maddison (Ian), Becca, Christopher, Karley (Colton), Max, Sarah (Ben), Julie, and Jasmine as well as her great grandchildren, Zoey, Tucker, Jacob, Derek and Marigold. She was preceded in death by her husband Steve, her parents, and her brothers, Carl, Fred, and Roy.
As per her wishes, there will be no formal services held. A private memorial service will be held to celebrate her life on Friday May 6th, 2022.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the staff at Lakeview Hospital for providing our mom the kindness, respect, and excellent care that she deserved in her final days and for extending that same compassion and care to her family that were there by her side until her final breath.
