Stephen Harry Covalt

January 8, 1947 — January 23, 2022

Stephen Harry Covalt returned to the loving embrace of his ‘ohana on Sunday, January 23, 2022. Surrounded by family, he passed peacefully in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The only child of J. Harry Covalt and Edna Leilani Farr, Steve was born on January 8, 1947, in Honolulu, Territory of Hawai‘i. Descended from Hawaiian ali‘i and European emigrants to the Kingdom of Hawai‘i, he grew up in Kailua, O‘ahu, in a large Hawaiian family with a front row seat to the many political and cultural changes of his island home. With the ocean as his backyard playground, he spent his youth surfing, fishing, and playing golf. As an adult he loved playing weekend beach volleyball with family and friends, earning the nickname Silver Fox for his ability to misdirect and score. He was forever teasing, joking, and playing at everything he did.

A graduate of The Kamehameha Schools, class of 1964, Steve attended college at the University of Southern Utah and University of Hawai‘i, Manoa. During his freshman year at USU he met Katherine Frampton at a dance and fell in love. They married in 1966 and are the parents of four children: Michelle Kalehuamakanoe (Kevin) Parker, Heidi Ann Kaleoha‘alulu (Michael) Conti, Jeffery Kalai Covalt, and Susan Puanani (Josh) Barber. They raised their family mainly in Hawai‘i until 1991 when they moved to Orem, Utah.

Steve had many careers in his life. In his youth he was a construction worker and gas jockey back when Chevron was Standard Oil. Rising quickly through the ranks, he served in various corporate positions at Chevron including Manager of Pacific Operations in Hawai‘i and in 1984 was promoted to the Director of Consumer and Dealer Affairs in San Francisco, becoming the youngest director in corporate history. After fleeing corporate life in California in 1986, Steve and Kathy returned to Hawai‘i and purchased a Chevron Service Station in ‘Ewa Beach, O‘ahu. In 1991, they sold their business and moved to Utah where Steve began another career as a Construction Project Manager, managing large commercial and residential projects in Utah and Hawai‘i.

In his later years, Steve’s passions included maintaining a spotless lawn, cheering loudly at all his grandkid’s sporting and other events, shooting, modifying trucks, and enjoying all the fun and joy life offers—and creating much of that fun. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathy, his four children, three sons-in-law, fourteen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, along with an assortment of neighborhood kids who call him grandpa.
