Nelda McDermott Bangerter

April 14, 1936 — July 17, 2019

Nelda McDermott Bangerter, 83 of Bountiful, UT passed away peacefully at her home on July 17, 2019.  She was born April 14, 1936, at her parents’ home in Bountiful, the daughter of Joseph Martin McDermott and Alice Argyle McDermott.  Nelda was raised in Bountiful and attended public schools there and was a graduate of Westminster College St. Mark’s Hospital School of Nursing.

While serving on the stake “Gold and Green Ball” committee, she met Vernon Brent Bangerter at a committee meeting.  After a short time serving together, Brent worked up the courage to ask her out and their first date was in January of 1960.  It was such a success, they were engaged the next month on Valentines Day and sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple the next month on March 18, 1960.  They made their home in Bountiful where they raised three sons and one daughter; Kevin, Kelly, Doug and Cindy.

Most of Nelda’s working years were dedicated to health care as a Registered Nurse at St. Mark’s and other hospitals in Utah, California and Nebraska as well as in the LDS Church Office Buidling Health Unit.  Giving flu shots to Church employees and General Authorities was one of her cherished experiences.  One day she came home smiled and said, “today I ‘needled’ President Hinckley”.  Nelda was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in a variety of callings including; Teacher, Stake Relief Society Board, Ward Relief Society President and Ordinance Worker in the Bountiful LDS Temple.  The highlight of her service was the many missions she served with her husband Brent.  They served together at Salt Lake Temple Square, 1985-1988; Fiji Suva Mission – Vanuatu and New Caledonia, 1997-1999; Micronesia Guam Mission – Marshall Islands, 1999-2000; then as “Mission Mom” while Brent served as President of the Micronesia Guam Mission, 2000-2003; Missionary Department in the Europe Area Presidency’s Office in Frankfurt, Germany, 2008-2009.

She is survived by her husband, Brent; sons Kevin Bangerter (Jackie Kelly); Kelly (Mary Lou) Bangerter; daughter-in-law Becky (Doug) Bangerter; and daughter Cindy (Gary) Harp.  She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many extended family  members and friends.  She is preceded in death by her parents; infant twin-sisters; and son, Doug.

Nelda will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend who left an example and legacy of faith, love and service.  Always finding the good in all with whom she associated.  Never “speaking guile”.

Our family would like to extend their gratitude to Aaron Lewis and his staff at Renew Home Health and Hospice, for the loving care they provided to Nelda.

A visitation will be held Friday evening, July 26, at Russon Mortuary 295 North Main St, Bountiful, UT. where family and friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at 11:00 am with a visitation starting at 9:30 am at the Bountiful 24th  Ward Chapel, 720 East 550 North, Bountiful, UT with Bishop David G. Horsley officiating.. Interment will follow in the Bountiful City Cemetery.
