Mikal Ames Wersland

January 23, 1971 — September 2, 2018

Mikal Ames Wersland, 47, quietly passed on Sunday, September 2, 2018. A Father, Son, Brother and Friend, Mike impacted thousands by the way he lived and served. It is hard to describe Mike to anyone who didn't know him. A man among men, Mike was a Guide, Provider, and fierce Protector to his family, friends, and the community. The second of seven children, Mike filled the role of comedian and jokester, often bringing everyone to tears laughing; a trait he never lost. Mike lived his life with passion and sheer will-power, despite all odds. At the age of 14, Mike was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and much like anything he was challenged with, he took it head on and refused to let it rule his life. Mike graduated from Viewmont High School in Bountiful, Utah in 1989. He served a two-year mission for the LDS Church in Los Angeles, California where he learned to love the polynesian people and developed a passion for helping troubled youth. Early on in his law enforcement career, Mike established a group called TAGG (Teens Against Gangs and Graffiti) where he traveled the state mentoring, teaching and leading youth to make good choices and stay away from trouble. Mike is a retired police officer after more than 23 years of selfless and exemplary service, having worked with the University of Utah, South Salt Lake City, DEA, SWAT, and finally the Unified Police Department. Mike was an inventor and entrepreneur his whole life. His most recent invention (www.throttlemaxx.com) makes the often bumpy side-by-side ATV ride a little more enjoyable. Typical of Mike, who often made the bumpy road of life a little more enjoyable for everyone that knows him. It has often been said that while Mike was not a perfect man, he was a great man.
He was married for 18 years to Jennice Oldroyd Wersland.  He is survived by his children Jordan (25), Brooke (15), Katie (13), and Alex (10); his parents, Swen and Dora Wersland; siblings Jason Wersland, Michelle Kunze, Kirk (Jamie) Wersland, Lance (Nicholle) Wersland, Alex Wersland, and Timalee (Rolynn) Snow.  "You were gone too soon!"
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the Centerville North Stake Center, 1461 North Main, Centerville, where a viewing will be held Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Saturday morning 9:45-10:45 am at the church prior to services. Interment-Farmington City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a memorial fund set up for his children at https://www.gofundme.com/mikal-wersland-memorial "
