Marjorie Artis Holbrook

February 10, 1927 — February 7, 2021

Marjorie Artis Holbrook, our dear Mother, Nana and Great Nana, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, February 7, 2021 in Bountiful, UT. She was born February 10, 1927 in Dover, Delaware to Raymond Artis and Elizabeth Yocum. She is preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Walter Pratt Holbrook.

Marjorie was born and raised on the East Coast, where she was the second of eight girls. She grew up in Delaware and as a teenager, the family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she met her husband, Walter. She was working in a coffee shop at the time she met him who was on his way to Belgium to attend art school, but due to a shipping strike he could not leave the country and he ended up in Philadelphia, working. They were married October 8, 1946. They lived on the East Coast, including Pennsylvania where Mom became the first female underwriter for the State, an incredible accomplishment for the time. They lived in western New York, where they started their family and eventually came to settle in Bountiful, Utah in 1972, where they have resided ever since.

Mom taught us how to work hard and that education was important. She would often take Karen and Vonnie with her when she worked the night shift at Winchell’s Donuts in Bountiful. She also worked in insurance as an underwriter while raising her family. Mom was extremely well read, loved to play and win at scrabble (she was like a human thesaurus), had an incredible memory for baseball scores, and was a great lover of animals. During her life she had many dogs, most of which were St Bernard’s and German Shepherds.

She is survived by her children, Stephanie Stone-Todd, John W. Holbrook II, Karen Holbrook-Hughes (Jackie), and Veronica Bentley (Doug). Four grandchildren and three great grandchildren with the fourth great-grandbaby due on February 17, 2021. And her beloved fur baby, Goldie.

The family would like to give special thanks to Bristol Hospice for their incredible help with caring for Mom.

There will be a viewing from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, Thursday, 11 February 2021 at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful. A graveside service for family on Friday, 12 February 2021, at Bountiful City Cemetery.
