Lauraine Frances O’Neill Pitcher

1945 ~ 2021

Lauraine Frances O’Neill Pitcher Layton, Utah Our mother will always be known to her family as a kind, thoughtful, and beautiful soul. Lauraine passed on to her next estate on October 1, 2021. She was born March 11, 1945 in Mackay, Queensland, Australia to Marjorie (Eunice) Gohdes and Thomas Patrick O’Neill. As a child she was known by those close to her as Sharkey. She enjoyed riding her bike through town, playing tennis, eating wild fruit, and roller skating with her siblings Ngairie and Mervyn. Lauraine learned to play both the piano and the guitar. She loved the water and would often spend her childhood days wading in flooded creeks and visiting the beach. In high school she really loved being on the basketball team with her younger sister. She was a proud Australian and loved teaching her children about her native country. Everyone who encountered her found her accent endearing.

At a very young age she enjoyed memorizing the Old Testament stories and was taught to say the Lord’s prayer at bedtime and supper. Her mother would dress her up and send her and her siblings to whichever church was closest. She later joined the church at the age of 13 and diligently served in as many as five callings at one time in her small branch. She was true to her covenants, had a strong testimony of the gospel, and strived to teach her children about the Savior. Her motto was “Faith is mighty not by chance, but by practice.”

In 1965 she moved to the United States and married Scott Lynn Pitcher in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Together they had four sons and two daughters – who were the joys of her life.

Lauraine was very talented at making things beautiful. She enjoyed being in the yard and often spent time at the garden center choosing plants for her perfectly manicured garden. Her family found their mum’s yard a haven and will always think of her in the sounds of windchimes and singing birds. She was also a very talented artist and enjoyed painting not only pictures but had a steady hand when it came to ceramics. Many of her pieces became her children’s favorite holiday decorations.

In her early married life, she enjoyed teaching gymnastics alongside her husband Scott. They taught for many years in their home, and later at their own gym. After she retired from teaching professionally, she enjoyed teaching her grandchildren in the backyard; and they loved learning from her.

Lauraine was a hard worker. She held a job until her passing. There was never a task she wouldn’t attempt. She changed the oil and the brakes in the family car, small repairs around the home and countless other tasks.

She is the mum to six children: Tamsen (Ron Anson),John (Nicola), Kent, David (Heather), Clayton (Hailey), and Nyree (Chad Brinkerhoff). Nana to 29, great- nana to 5, beloved sister and auntie to many – from Italy to Australia. Lauraine loved her family dearly and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for them. There was never a family gathering when she didn’t show up with a box full of food to ease the burden from the host. She loved spoiling her family with their favorite treats and was always thinking of what she could buy to bring a smile to her family members faces. She often spent quality time with her grandchildren doing crafts and baking goodies. She made every holiday fun with her festive sweaters and matching jewelry. Nobody left her home without a trinket from her house that she thought they’d enjoy. She was always thinking of her family and what would make them happy. She was a true joy to be with!

A viewing will be held at Sunday evening from 6-8 pm at Russons Mortuary, 1585 W. 300 S., Syracuse, Utah. A family graveside service will be held Monday, October 11 at the Weston, Idaho cemetery.
