Laura Rose Volpe Cheney, much loved mother, teacher, friend and grandmother, age 92 passed away in the early morning hours of June 11, 2022 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

She was born on December 16, 1929, in Princeton, British Columbia, Canada to Mary and John Volpe. Laura married William (Bill) Cheney on August 14, 1954, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She moved to Utah with her husband, and created a beautiful life in Salt Lake City and Bountiful.

After her two children were on their way to adulthood, she returned to The University of Utah to obtain her degree in education. Always a lover of learning, Laura continued to study and question. She happily obtained her American citizenship at that time, of which she was extremely proud.

As a teacher at Layton Elementary School, Laura saw potential in every child she encountered. She returned to the University at that time, to obtain her Masters Degree in education. Following her husband’s death, she focused on travel, exercise, and her beloved grandson, William Christopher (Billy).

In the final decades of her life, she delighted in a beautiful, inspired friendship with Don L Perkins, enjoying adventures, good conversations, theater, opera and discussions of faith. Her love of her parent’s native land, Italy, never wavered, nor did her love of classical music and laughter.

Laura is survived by her children, Bill Cheney (Kathryn) Uintah, Utah, Michelle Cheney, Austin, Texas, Grandson Billy, John Chiogna, and dozens of friends in Utah, Texas and around the world. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, Sister, Elsa.
