Kathy Hickman Murray

August 30, 1972 — March 19, 2022

Kathy Hickman Murray our beloved wife, mother, sister and friend returned to her heavenly home on Saturday March 19, 2022.  Kathy was born in Bountiful Utah on August 30, 1972, to Michael and Kathleen Hickman. Kathy is the fourth sister in a family of six girls.  She lived her childhood in Kaysville Utah, where she attended and graduated from Davis High School.

Kathy met the love of her life Shawn Murray at Sounds Easy Video in Kaysville Utah where Kathy was working as a manager.  They were married on May 5, 1993.  Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on June 15, 1994.

The two biggest events in Kathy’s life occurred on March 17, 1999, and on August 27, 2002, when her two children Karson and Abby respectively became a part of her life.  She always said she “had the best job in the world, being a mother.” Kathy dedicated her life to supporting and teaching her children.  Kathy could always be found at football games, school events, family parties or any other occasion that involved supporting her children.  There wasn’t a birthday party, holiday or event in her children’s lives that Kathy wouldn’t take the opportunity to make extra special.

Kathy was the master of making beautiful decorations and projects from treasures she would acquire from the years of being an avid antiquer and early morning garage sale connoisseur. It was said that “she never saw anything for free that wasn’t worth taking.” These objects were transformed from mundane meaningless objects to beautiful, thoughtful decorations for her home, and the homes of friends and family she would share them with.

After a bone morrow transplant in 2005, Kathy became a cancer survivor.  Kathy’s ability to define her life by her actions, service and love for her family and friends astonished those who treated her over the years.  Kathy defined her illness; her illness did not define her.

Kathy was very dedicated to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many church callings throughout her life. Her favorite church calling was working in the Young Women’s organization. The girls she served loved Kathy for her enthusiasm, care and love.  She truly cared for the girls, and they knew, and felt it.

Kathy is survived by her spouse Shawn Murray, her two children Karson (Mashae) Murray, and Abby (Elijah) McCallum; parents, Michael (Janet) Hickman and Kathleen (Sherwin) Thomas; father-in-law (Steven Murray); six sisters: Michelle (Martin) Stanley, Katrina (Jacob) Knowlton, Karleen (Dale) Brown, Monica (Chris) Shulz and Marcy (Robinson) Valenzuela; sister-in-law Shelby (Jason) Asplund and her dog Grace.

Kathy is proceeded in death by both of her grandparents, her mother-in-law Bernice Murray, brother-in-law Steven Murray, nephew Armando Valenzuela, and niece Lucia Valenzuela.

Friends and family may call Sunday evening March 27, 2022 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Syracuse Mortuary 1585 W. 300 S. Syracuse UT.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 28, 2022, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2024 South 1475 West  Syracuse UT.  Interment will follow the funeral services at the Syracuse City Cemetery.

Special thanks to the medical team of Dr. Daniel Couriel M.D. and the numerous health care professionals at Huntsman Cancer Institute who worked tirelessly to allow Kathy to remain with us during the 17 years of her treatment.

The family would also like to express appreciation for the love and support shown by members of the Maple Wood Ward and the countless neighbors and friends that helped and served Kathy recently and throughout the years.  Their love, support, and compassion have helped beyond our ability to express.
