Joanne “Joan” Bult Tanner

May 15, 1930 — June 17, 2022

Our beautiful and loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, Joan Tanner, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2022.

Joanne “Joan” Bult Tanner was born on May 15, 1930, to Frank Powel Bult and Ardelle Ball in Salt Lake City.   She was the oldest of two girls and relished her role of “big sister” to Barbara for 89 years.

Joan attended West High School, where she graduated in 1948.   She worked at Utah Auto Parts after graduation.  She met and fell in love with Harold Tanner, and they were married on Jan 1, 1953, and later sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple, spending 55 years together until his death in 2018.  After getting married they moved to Los Angeles while Harold attended Dental School at UCLA.   They returned to SLC after graduation, moving in with Joan’s parents while they got settled and had their first son, Bradford Jay.   Joan and Harold purchased a home on 1500 East in SLC where they welcomed their second son, Mark Harold.  They lived in the home for 50 years.

Joan began work at Meadow Gold, working there for many years with her sister Barbara. She then moved to Granite Credit Union, working first as a teller and loan officer before moving to advertising and marketing, helping to grow the credit union.  She worked there for 25 years, until her retirement.

Joni enjoyed many adventures with Harold as part of the Teton Club, traveling with their 5th wheel trailer all over the United States and Canada.   She especially loved spending time in Teton National Forest, and Courtside, Arizona with friends and club members.  She loved her life as a “snowbird” in St George over the last 30 years at Winter Haven, making many cherished and lasting friendships with others in the park.

Joni was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities for the Winder 9th Ward.   Her favorite calling was serving at the Salt Lake City Temple in the Brides Room. Recently Joan was a member of the Holbrook Creek Branch in Bountiful, Utah and enjoyed her association with the ward members there.  She and Harold moved to Creekside Senior Living in 2018 and enjoyed all the new friends she made there, participating in day trips, parties, theatre excursions and craft sessions.  There Joni met many who became special angels in her life, (you know who you are) surrounding her daily, providing friendship, support and a watchful eye.

Joni was an outstanding cook. Her potato salad was renowned, as was her love of ice cream, and her home was frequented by her sons’ friends for “Joni’s Julius”.  Joni loved to paint and sew, and her grandchildren have many items made by her loving hands. With her sweet, gentle nature, Joni had many friends.  She loved to golf and spent many afternoons on the greens, with her husband and friends.  She loved boating, and spending time near or on the water. Joni also loved travelling, collecting Lladro, and enjoyed many memorable trips and cruises with friends and family.  Most of all Joni fiercely loved her family and enjoyed nothing more than being surrounded by them.   She was known for her consistent fashionista style, her grace, kindness, her sense of humor, and for her personal sacrifices for her family and friends.  Her quiet love for her friends, and her children’s and grandchildren’s friends, touched and enriched many lives.  Our lives have lost a bright light, but we know that she will be shining on us from Heaven.

Joni is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Harold.

She is survived by her sister Barbara (Bob), her son Brad (Susan) and their children Zach (Jentry), Ryan (Jaime), Brady (Melissa) and Chaz (Whitney), and their 9 grandchildren; her son Mark (Dee) and their children Grady and Katie, and nephews Frank (LynnAnn), Mike (Jan), Justin (Sally), Valen, Kylan(Beverly) and Clelan(Carol).

Joni’s family would like to extend special acknowledgement and a very large thank you to the staff at Creekside Senior Living who made the last four years so enjoyable for her.  She truly loved all of you and loved her two-bedroom apartment overlooking the waterfall, pond and putting green. The family would also like to thank Rhoda, Krista, and Shannon who helped provide exceptional care for her over the last year.  And a final, special thank you to Dr. Scott Hacking, her “mom-crush” and his staff at St Marks Hospital.  Visiting all of you was the highlight of her week.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main Street, Bountiful, Utah where a viewing will be held from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to services.  Internment at the Salt Lake City Cemetery will follow the funeral.

Services will be streamed live on the Russon Brothers Mortuary Facebook page and on this obituary page.  The live stream will begin about 10-15 minutes prior to the service and will be posted below.
