Harry B Gerlach, Jr.

April 6, 1952 — February 8, 2021

“When the heart weeps for all that is lost, the soul leaps for all that is found.”

After a lifetime of love and service, Ben passed away on February 8, 2021, at the age of 68. He was born in Aurora, Colorado, the oldest of six children to Harry Gerlach and Thea Schindler Gerlach on April 6, 1952.

Ben married Vicki Knowlton on August 14, 1974, in the Salt Lake Temple.  He was a devoted husband and father of three sons and one daughter; Jason (Pam), Nate (Ana), Adam (Erika), and Kristen Merrill, as well as 14 grandchildren.  His family is his greatest treasure, and he loves us individually and unconditionally.

Ben’s testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ guided and anchored his life’s journey.  He set a shining example to family, friends, loved ones, and anyone that crossed his path.

He loved photography and captured the majesties of nature and family time.  He loved the outdoors, hiking, camping (in his trailer), especially in Yellowstone and Waterton (Canada), and working in the yard.  His vegetable garden is legendary, especially to the grandchildren.

Ben was an accomplished runner, having completed four marathons and many 10k’s.

He readily served wherever he was called as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He served as a full-time missionary in the Italy North Mission from 1971-73.  Bishop Gerlach dearly loved the members of the Heritage Ward and the neighbors in his community.

Ben’s honesty, wisdom, and sage counsel blessed all of us.

Ben had a tireless work ethic and loved working as a Safety Professional at WCF, FedEx, and especially during his 12 years working for the Church, during which he was able to visit 48 temples in countries worldwide.

The family wishes to thank caring neighbors, friends, church members, and exceptional medical professionals for all their kindness and support.

Friends and family may visit an open viewing Friday, February 12, between 6:00 and 8:00 PM at the Russon Brother’s Mortuary 1585 West 300 South, Syracuse.
