Gordon R. Bates, 90, our loved and respected husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed away at the Dixie Regional Hospital late Saturday on the 11th of September 2004. Born September 28, 1913 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Frank and Agnes Bates. Married his first and lifetime sweetheart Margaret Owen, May 24, 1935. Gordon?s life was full of accomplishments. He was 1932 class president of West High School where he participated in football, baseball, track and basketball. He was awarded the F.C. Richmond All Around Gold Medal for best scholastic and athletic performance. Gordon was a strong, loving and courageous man. He was the owner of Travelers Oil Co. for 30 years, participated in the bail bonding business, a director of the Foot Printers Association and was on the Board of Directors Intermountain Oil Marketers Association. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and was President of the Wasatch Duck Club for many years. Gordon was a member of the Oakridge Country Club where he loved golf and had many friends. After retirement he managed the Village III Condominiums until his move to St. George where he managed the Town Oaks Condos until his death. Gordon is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Margaret; sons, Gordon Roselyn Bates, Jr., Gilbert, AZ; Ralph Fredra Bates, Laguna Beach, CA; daughter, Sondra Clark Saunders, Woods Cross, UT; 9 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Lorraine Cleverly and Jean Allen. Preceded in death by brothers Lee Bates and Ralph Bates, and a grandson, Paul Saunders. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 16, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main, where friends may call one hour prior to services.
