Eugene Severin

November 5, 1926 — June 20, 2021

Eugene Severin, 94, died from natural causes on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at his home in Bountiful, Utah. Eugene Axel Severin was born on November 5, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Karl A. Severin and Valborg Victoria Anderson. He is survived by his four children, Brenda Shamy, Mark (Kerstin), Karen Fenn (Wade), and Jeanette Cunningham (Vince).

Eugene’s parents died in 1935 from injuries due to a car accident. They were hit by a car at night while walking to the bus stop. They lived at 4127 Highland Dr in Salt Lake City. Gene was 9 years old. All of his siblings were sent to sisters of his mother, and Gene went to Sarah Pearson, also a sister who lived in Bountiful. He attended Stoker Elementary School for a few years until the family moved to Salt Lake City where they later opened Pearson Floral on 33rd South. Gene graduated from Granite High School.

Eugene Severin is a WWII veteran serving honorably from 27 September 1944 to 26 June 1946. He was a Carpenter’s Mate Third Class earning the Asiatic Pacific America Area Victory medal, the Philippine Liberation medal, and the CB Shoulder Insignia. Upon completion of his service and honorable discharge he returned home to work at the family floral business for 31 years.

Eugene married Dorothy Grace Neumann (recently passing away on June 1, 2021) on December 6, 1950 in the Salt Lake temple. They bought a small two-bedroom home in Bountiful, Ut when Brenda was 5 and lived there for the rest of their lives raising their 4 children.

Eugene was well known as a Nurseryman working for the Pearson Floral in Salt Lake City. But even in retirement he maintained many yards in the area with numerous people in the Bountiful area soliciting advice about flowers, trees, shrubs and types of soil throughout the years. He also worked for the LDS Church from 1977 to 1991 as a Meetinghouse Maintenance Worker, keeping the building in tip top shape. He permanently retired thereafter.

Eugene was also known, along with Dorothy as the family that provided very creative year around outdoor yard decorations throughout the year for the community’s enjoyment. Perhaps Eugene and Dorothy were best known for their Easter and Christmas decorations that drew many visitors to the house. But almost as well regarded and enjoyed were their July 4th and Halloween decorations. Eugene worked hard long hours supporting his family. He spent many hours tending to the family garden to ensure its plentiful bounty for family, friends and neighbors. Eugene’s children learned the lessons and benefits of hard work from his example. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and a spirited game of horseshoes! He was blessed with 18 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.

An extra special thanks to Dignity Hospice for their kind and loving service to our father. We will remember Lisa and Abbey with fondness.
