Elwood Walker Chambers

Elwood Walker Chambers passed away, Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at his home in Dietrich, Idaho with is loving wife and other family members close by.

He was born Sept. 12, 1916 in Marysville, Idaho, the son of Hugh ?C? and Coral Walker Chambers. As a youth he lived in Idaho and Montana. He graduated from the eight grade at Marysville, Idaho.

As a young man he saw a recruiting poster encouraging young men to join up and see the world. He enlisted in the Navy in 1936 and see the world he did! During World War II he was stationed in the South Pacific. After the war and after a short stay in Ashton, Idaho, he enlisted in the Army and was stationed at various bases in the United States, Panama, and Korea. He retired from the service after 20 years as a Warrent Officer . He was also a member of the Shoshone chapter of the VFW.

He met and married his eternal sweetheart, Barbara Allen on Sept. 7, 1940 at Idaho Falls, Idaho. They were sealed later in the Logan Utah LDS temple. To this couple were born four children. Elwood Jr, Harold Lee, Lorna and Joel Allen. He was an active member of the LDS Church and he loved doing family history work and writing stories.

Woody, as he was known to his friends and family, loved to travel and did so extensively, visiting every state in the union. In their travels around the United States, he and Barbara shared many adventures. At one time, their picture showed up on the front page of the Tombstone Epitaph as tourists.

He left behind a legacy of over 80 stories of his boyhood and military experiences. His children and grandchildren and great grandchildren will enjoy learning about him through reading these stories.

He is survived by his loving wife Barbara of 66 years, his two sons, Harold Jeanette of Dietrich, Idaho and Joel Toni of Woods Cross, Utah, 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters, Nellie Bate, Idaho Falls, Peggy Pein, Oak Grove, Oregon, JoAnn Whittle, Boise, Lois Barnes, Portland, Oregon and Guy Whittle, Tacoma, Washington. He is preceded in death by his son Elwood Jr., and daughter Lorna, and two half brothers, Buddy and Ronald.

Funeral services will be held at the Dietrich Ward building on Saturday, February 3, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. Friends may call prior to services from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Burial will follow in the Shoshone Cemetery.
