DuWayne G. Squire

January 14, 1928 — July 22, 2021

DuWayne was born January 14, 1928, to Amelia Sanders and Loren DeLance Squire in La Verkin, Utah, the fourth of ten children. DuWayne grew up a few homes away from Helen Gubler, who danced her way into his heart at an open-air dance. DuWayne swept Helen off her feet and these best friends and sweethearts were married for eternity in the St. George Utah Temple on December 10, 1947. They were blessed with nine children; two of their little ones died as babies.

DuWayne loved America and proudly served during the Korean War to preserve our freedoms. He graduated from BYU with a degree in accounting and minor degrees in finance and banking, and economics. He worked as an accountant for Bish’s Sheet Metal Works for 39 years. DuWayne was an expert mechanic and skilled handyman who could fix anything; he used these talents often to bless his family and others. A very knowledgeable and bright man, DuWayne was known as a hard worker with a strong work ethic. He retired but never stopped working. Our dad is a man of wisdom, honor, and integrity. Ever grateful and appreciative, DuWayne lived a life filled with thanksgiving and gratitude.

DuWayne loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed waterskiing, camping, and fishing with his family. Favorite family outings include waterskiing trips to Lake Powell, Bear Lake, and Willard Bay. DuWayne could out-ski anyone, often skiing for 45 minutes at a time; he was still able to get up on one ski and slalom at the age of 84½! DuWayne made the best goulash on scouting and camping trips which few could replicate. Dad and Mom were fun to be around and they filled our home with joy and laughter. Dad often sang or hummed cheerful tunes as he went about his day. Wherever he went and in all that he did, DuWayne made the world a better place; he would stop and weed in the yards of perfect strangers, befriend the neighborhood dogs, pick up litter on his daily walks and so much more. He was kind, respectful, and delightful!

Always a faithful and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, DuWayne magnified many callings including bishop, high priests group leader, ward finance clerk, Scoutmaster, and a favorite calling as a Primary teacher. His countenance radiated goodness and light that drew others to him. DuWayne had a special gift working with the youth as they knew he genuinely cared about them; he was a tremendous influence for good in their lives. A friend to all, he was ever building and lifting others up. DuWayne and Helen served three missions together to the St. George Temple Visitors’ Center and Historic Sites, the Virginia Richmond Mission, and the South Davis Branch (Care Center). They also served in the Salt Lake and Bountiful Temples. He and Helen served on the Bountiful Handcart Days committee for three years. DuWayne had a strong testimony of the gospel which he shared often. A spiritual giant, man of wisdom, and ever stalwart in the gospel, DuWayne always had an ear to listen and was often sought out for his advice. DuWayne was an amazing example of faith, daily sharing his testimony in the life he lived. He was a teacher, exemplar, great friend and neighbor to all. Together, DuWayne and Helen generously helped support grandchildren who served missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

DuWayne considered his greatest achievement to be his marriage to Helen and their nine children. Dad showed his pure love, compassion, and commitment, as he devotedly cared for his sweetheart, Helen, for many years; he set a perfect example of devotion, sweetness, and charity for his children as he lovingly took care of our mother who suffered from Alzheimer’s. He never saw her with the disease; he only had eyes for his sweetheart whom he loved so dearly. In addition to our family, many others have recognized the special love DuWayne and Helen shared.

DuWayne will be remembered most for his kindness and goodness; his genuine interest in others; his gratitude and generosity; his faith and faithfulness; his dedication and devotion to his beloved wife and family as exhibited in the service and support he freely gave; and his love for our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. He taught without preaching, led without compulsion, loved without condition, and lived without pretense. DuWayne was masterful as our family patriarch and, not only generated love, but exemplified it in every way. He had a pure and honest heart. His legacy will continue to live on for generations in the lives of those who have been influenced by him.

DuWayne is survived by his loving children: M. J. (Joan) Squire, Kim (Nancy) Squire, Brad (Jo Ann) Squire, Verlynn (Thomas) Sheffield, Sheralee (John) Steele, Melodee (Dean) Thornton, and Cyndee (Bret) Gallacher; his brothers, Adrien and Scott, and sisters, LoRene Turner and Sandra Howard. Among his posterity, he counts 32 cherished grandchildren and 66 treasured great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife and sweetheart, Helen; their two beautiful infant children: Kirk DuWayne and Krystal Squire; two sweet infant grandchildren: Colton DuWayne Steele and James Preston Thornton; his loving parents, an infant sister, and brothers DeLance, Phil, Don, and Jerald. Unquestionably, there is a happy reunion taking place as they are together again!

The family wishes to thank Bristol Hospice, especially Julianne, Aerial, and Sunny, as well as Creekside Sr. Living and their compassionate nurses and staff, particularly Lejla, for the loving care they provided our father.
