Doyle Shurtz

d. April 13, 2007

Doyle Park Shurtz, 86, of Bountiful, Utah, passed away on Friday, April 13, 2007 in Mesa, Arizona. Doyle was born on July 29, 1920 to Edwin Ray and Mary Alexie Roundy Shurtz in Escalante, Utah where he attended school and helped with the family sheep business. In 1938 he enrolled at the University of Utah in the aeronautical engineering program. While going to school he also obtained his private pilot?s license. When World War II broke out he was accepted into the Army Cadet Program. On September 3, 1943, just a few days after earning his Pilots Wings, Doyle married LoRee Munson in the Salt Lake Temple. He spent the war years assigned as an officer to the Air Training Command. Following the war, Doyle returned to school and received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. They returned to their hometown of Escalante after completion of his schooling where he became involved in numerous occupations ? owning and operating a meat locker plant, engaging in most of the building trades, radio repair, and farming. In 1957 the family moved to Bountiful when Doyle accepted an engineering job in the Civil Service, assigned to Hill Field Air Force Base where he worked until his retirement in 1980. While there he played a significant role in the development of the Minuteman missile system. Doyle was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in numerous callings. He will be well remembered for his many years of dedicated service in the scouting program, for which he was awarded the council?s highest honor, the Silver Beaver award. Following his retirement, Doyle and LoRee served four honorable full-time missions for the Church. Doyle has a strong faith in his Lord Jesus Christ, and left a legacy of testimony, service, hard work, self-sufficiency, provident living and love of spouse and family for each of us to cherish. Doyle is survived by his wife, LoRee; seven children: Melvin Barbara of Anderson, SC; Janell Todd Robert of Provo, UT; Donald Renae of Wenatchee, WA; Gary Dana of Mesa, AZ; Steven Jane of Fruit Heights, UT; Carol Beck Curtis and Michael Lisa of Centerville, UT; 50 grandchildren; 35 great-grand children; and two sisters, Vivian Collard and Betty Schow. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Chase and Beryl, and daughter-in-law Melonye. Funeral services will be held Saturday April 21 at 11:00 AM at the Bountiful 36th Ward Building at 102 E. 1400 S., with interment following at Bountiful City Cemetery. Friends may call at the viewing Friday evening, April 20, from 6-8 PM at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main in Bountiful, or from 9:45 to 10:30 AM at the church prior to the funeral service.
