Dorothy Hardy Barrett

Dorothy was born April 22, 1929 in Cache Junction, Utah to Orval and Mary McKay Hardy. She was the youngest of 5 children. She had two older sisters, Mabel (Arnout Hartvizen), Helen (Alan Marler), and two older brothers, Jack Heber (Bertha Ouellette) and Todd Hardy. She loved growing up in Cache Junction which was a small railroad town of about 25 families, where her dad worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. Now it is almost a ghost town as most families have left. At that time there was no grocery store and no phones other than the one in the Union Pacific Depot that was used if there was an emergency. Her family did not get indoor plumbing until she was almost 12 years old. She always said that it was very scary running the ½ block to the outhouse in the dark as there were no lights.
Mom grew up during the depression. It was a hard time for everyone. People lucky enough to have jobs worked from morning until night and they instilled those work ethics to their children. Mom always had chores to do every day after school and they had to be done right or done over. Her family had about a half acre of land where they had fruit trees, raspberry bushes, and a big garden that always needed weeding. In addition, they had a cow, pigs and chickens. There was always a lot of work to be done and everyone was kept busy. Mom was a hard worker all her life. She always kept busy.
Mom met dad after she graduated from High School and moved to Salt Lake to work for the telephone company. They met at a dance that was held at the old Rainbow Hall. Dad talked her into letting him take her home after the dance and they started dating. They got married on October 8, 1948. Dad was working as a fireman, and they didn’t have a lot of money, but they learned how to make it together. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on February 26, 1957. They had four children: Shauna (Mark Dean), Gary Barrett (Patricia Nash), Deborah (Langdon Fisher), and Julie Barrett. She has eight grandchildren: Michael Dean, Jeffrey Dean (Elise), Jeremy Dean (Tiffany), Jonathan Dean (Sabrina), Katherine Barrett Curtis (Jeremey Curtis), Andrew Barrett (Felecia), Daniel Devine, Jacob Devine. She has nine great-grandchildren, Parker Dean, Macie Dean, Alexis Dean, Brynlee Dean, Finn Dean, Oliver Dean, Zoey Dean, Holly Barrett, Nigel Curtis. Our mom was the best. She always let us know how much she loved us and how special we were to her. We are going to miss her so much as she was such an important part of our lives.
Mom was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served in many capacities. She and dad served two missions for the LDS Church, one in Ireland and one in Canada. They had considered going on a third mission when dad was injured and paralyzed. She lovingly became his caregiver for the next 10 years, until he passed away on July 30, 2008.
Mom has always kept busy. She painted many beautiful picture both in oil paint and later in watercolor. She sewed and made many amazing quilts for her children and grandchildren that will be treasured. We were all lucky to have received many of these as gifts throughout the years.
One of mom’s defining qualities was the love she gave to all her friends and family. She made everyone feel important and special to her. Especially her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. She had many lifelong friends that she loved and kept in touch with. She loved getting cards and phone calls from friends. She filled everyday with something to look forward to. Her life was an example to us all as she remained upbeat and cheerful even through the most difficult times. She will remain in our hearts forever. We love you Mom.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday February 22, 2022 at the West Jordan Chapel, 7925 South 2700 West, where a family viewing will be held 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment-Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.  Services will be streamed live on the Russon Brothers Mortuary Facebook page and on this obituary page.
