Dev Nielson

Norman Dev Nielson, “Dev”, age 71, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on May 3, 2021 in Bountiful, Utah surrounded by his immediate family.

He is survived by his wife, Vicky Owens, their three children, Ryan (Jaimi), Tyler (Annalisa), and Jennifer. In addition, he is survived by his five grandchildren, Maxwell, Owen, Zane, Olive, and Naomi. He is also survived by his brother Todd (Robilyn).

Dev was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 27,1949, to Norman Gayle Nielson and Frances Bates (Nielson). He worked in the banking industry for the entirety of his career where he specialized in branch management and business banking. Dev and Vicky both attended Westminster College, where they met and fell in love. Vicky was the love of his life and they were married on August 4, 1972. Dev and Vicky built their lives in Bountiful, Utah where they raised their children who were the true joy of their world.

Dev was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend with a deep passion for sports—especially baseball. As a young boy of 10, 11 and 12, his talents in baseball garnered him a coveted spot in the Little League World Series. He was also an All-State shortstop for Olympus High School and later played baseball for Westminster College. His personal athletic gifts were passed on to his children and he never missed on an opportunity to be their team coach across a variety of sports. Dev spent countless hours in the backyard with his children helping them discover their own love of sports and refine their skills. As a spectator, he was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the University of Utah (football and basketball). As a committed University of Utah season ticket holder over many decades, he rarely missed a game.

Dev was extraordinarily hard working and maximized his strengths in everything he did. He enjoyed gardening and proudly kept an immaculate yard with the help of his wife. He could be found picking up hundreds of leaves one-by-one which he confessed was “therapeutic.” He had a deep knowledge and fascination with birds and enjoyed basking in the sun simply observing nature. Dev was a voracious reader and took it upon himself to write a book report after every completed book, even up until the time he passed. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling, and listening to music like Chicago, Santana, the Eagles, and the Moody Blues. He also attended many concerts with his wife and children. Dev was the ultimate family man and made every effort possible to support his family, by attending almost every school and extracurricular event.

Dev had an inspiring gift in his connection with people and genuinely loved all manners of personalities. Almost everyone who came in contact with him considered him a true optimist. As a seasoned listener, he had a way of making those around him feel unique and special—hanging on their every word and asking inquisitive questions. He often told stories about the people in his life, reveling in how great of a person they were. He never forgot a name or face. His smile was contagious and brilliant. He had a sense of humor to uplift anyone with his jokes and silly expressions. Dev was incredibly present and patient with everyone. He always made time to play games with his grandchildren and friends. He had such a diverse personality, and loved to truly talk about world matters, spiritual topics, sports statistics, books, and other current affairs. He offered well-informed insights on a myriad of matters. He lived well, learned eagerly, and taught lovingly.

He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him. His spirit will always be with us and our love for him forever in our hearts.

The Nielson family will receive friends and family on Monday, May 10, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. (viewing) at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main St. Bountiful, Utah and on Tuesday, May 11, 1:00 – 1:45 p.m. (viewing) and 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. (chapel ceremony) at Russon Mortuary followed by a graveside service at 3:00 p.m. at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
