Blaine Ariel Hyer

July 25, 1931 — January 11, 2022

Blaine Ariel Hyer peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on January 11, 2022.  He was born July 25, 1931 to Ariel Christian and Johanna VanWoerkom Hyer in Ogden Utah and was the third of four children.   He spent his growing years in West Ogden where he developed a strong work ethic by working on the family farm, milking cows and helping with the daily chores.

He served a mission to the Central States mission.  He talked fondly of the time he served as a missionary. After returning home, he met his eternal sweetheart, Bettie Barker on a blind date while they were students at Utah State.  They were married in the Logan Temple on June 9, 1955.   After graduation they moved to Clearfield, Utah where Bettie took a job teaching school and Blaine worked for the Union Pacific Railroad.  In 1960 they built their home in Kaysville and put down their roots.  It was here their six children were born but lost an infant son, Jed.  Blaine eventually returned to school and received a Masters of Education.  He began his career as a teacher and retired as principal of Farmington Junior High.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was faithful and unwavering in living the gospel.  After retiring, Blaine and Bettie served two missions, one to the Mississippi Jackson Mission and later at the LDS Visitors Center in Cody, Wyoming.  He served in many callings including Bishop, Welfare Agent and sealer in the Bountiful Temple. He had the spirit of Elijah and was proud of his heritage.  He was the driving force behind thousands of Dutch ancestors receiving their temple ordinances.

He was known for his promptness and dependability. He was a hard worker and saw everything through in all that he did.  Greeting friends and neighbors was his nature.  He met friends wherever he went and loved to visit.  Blaine was a master gardener and took great pride in his yard and garden and blessed others with his produce.  He made delicious homemade bread that he always had on hand for visiting family members.  He was conscious of the widows and those who needed help and quick to offer a hand.  He was an avid sports fan and loved watching BYU football and the Utah Jazz.

He moved to Whisper Cove Assisted Living Center in Kaysville where he spent the last two years of his life. There he made many friends and because of his friendliness naturally took on the role of greeter at the facility.  His fortitude to the end was exceptional.  Our family wishes to thank the team of caregivers at Whisper Cove for their love and dedication to our father.

Blaine is survived by his five children, Lynne (Rex) Thompson of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Drew (Susan) Hyer of Kaysville, Utah, Leigh Burk of Layton Utah, Ann (Darren) Barker of Centerville, Utah, Dana (Brent) Whiting of Idaho Falls, Idaho, 22 grandchildren and 42 great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sisters Joyce Kotter and Barbara Montgomery.  He is preceded in death by his wife Bettie, parents, brother Paul, and infant son Jed Alan Hyer.

Funeral services will be held at the Kaysville 13th Ward building, 875 East 200 North, Kaysville, on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at 1:00 p.m.  There will be a viewing on Friday, January 14, 2022 from 6 – 8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 1941 North Main Street in Farmington.  There will be an additional viewing on Saturday, January 15, 2022, from 11:30 – 12:30 at the church prior to the services.
