Dana Robert Young

December 24, 1947 ~ June 1, 2019 (age 71)

Dana Robert Young, age 71, passed away peacefully at his home on June 1, 2019. Dana was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 24, 1947, to Robert Alden Young and Lucile Rohrbach. He went to school in Salt Lake City and then Burley, Idaho, graduating from Burley High School in 1966. He also attended the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls. During and after high school, Dana played bass guitar in a rock and roll band called The Berets, traveling all around southern Idaho. Ultimately the band went to Hollywood, hoping to make it big. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Dana was drafted into the US Army in February 1969 and served as an infantryman and postal clerk. He served two combat tours to Vietnam, the first from 1969- 1970, the second from 1971-1972. He was honorably discharged in 1972. For his combat service, was awarded several medals and decorations.
Following his military service, Dana worked for Continental Bakery for one year. In 1973, he was hired by the United States Postal Service, later becoming a Letter Carrier. He continued in that profession until he retired in 2013. During his time as Letter Carrier, he became a great friend to the homeless in Pioneer Park.
Dana was a great supporter of the Letter Carrier's Union. He was very active in the Union Hall activities, representing the Salt Lake City Letter Carrier's Union in many conferences and conventions over the years.
Dana loved music and was an avid collector of all kinds of music. He also loved movies and collecting postage stamps, coins and currency. He loved watching sports and played basketball when he was young. Dana also enjoyed hunting with his Uncle Gus Rohrbach.
When his mother Lucile was widowed in 2007, Dana lovingly cared for her in many ways daily. He chauffeured her around for 12 years, saying he was, "Driving Miss Daisy."
Dana is survived by his mother, Lucile Rohrbach Young Gillett, his sister, Marlene (Frank) Westerman, his brother Dennis Owen (Wendy) Young. He was preceded in death by his sister Yvonne (Glen) Lipsey, his stepfather, Homer F Gillett, and his father Robert A Young.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 6, 2019, at Bountiful City Cemetery, Bountiful, Utah.
