A burial vault is a protective container for the casket. The vault is placed in the grave and casket is placed in the vault. Utah law does not require burial vaults but most cemeteries require vaults be used. The load of the earth upon a vault can be as heavy as 4000 pounds. Also cemeteries use heavy equipment for maintenance and for digging graves. An appropriate vault can protect the casket from the earth settling. A lined vault can also provide protection from other elements, such as ground water.
